  2. As a Merger & Acquisition Advisor, I visit with many owners of middle market companies (sales between $10MM and $350MM) who desire to sell their companies. Many of these owners spent years working in the business, not on the business. Every business owner that plans on selling within two years should take stock of the business, retain a professional who know what value drivers buyers seek and take action to put those value drivers in place. Without this pre-planning, the business owner will realize a sale price much lower than that which could have been achieved with a little pre-planning. Buyers pay for what is – not what could be.

Being employed and under-employed is not good for most people’s financial and mental health. Unemployed people, who know how to supervise employees and have sufficient capital to purchase a mature, profitable fairly-priced small or midsize business, can take control of their worklife and income by buying the right business the right way. Doing otherwise, for most people, is self-defeating; the longer most people work for someone else, the less financial security they will have. It is foolish for most people to expect a happy retirement. Medical and pension benefits will become less available as time goes on.

The good news is some people can do something worthwhile; they can take control now to increase their chances of a secure retirement and a decent income until then.
